Meet #WangSquad. Alexander Wang has enlisted 21 of
his “coolest
friends,” including musicians, models, and artists, to be part of his newly-formed
Wang Squad, a team that includes ILoveMakonnen, Vic Mensa, Baauer, and Travis
Scott.
The stylish squad models the designer’s
Spring/Summer 2016 campaign in a series of Instagram-inspired shots by famed
photographer Steven Klein. Makonnen licks a blunt and snaps a selfie alongside
AlunaGeorge’s Aluna Francis, while a shirtless Vic Mensa gets up close and
personal in the bathroom with model Anna Ewers. Meanwhile, La Flame strikes his
signature head down pose while chilling on the couch with Stella Lucia.
Wang says the campaign is all part of changing the
game. “There’s this kind of traditional idea of doing what we’ve previously
done,” he told Vogue,
“which is shoot a campaign, do the full 10 images that you place in magazines,
then you do a leak, and then it comes out online and people see it for maybe
about two, three days, and then by day four it’s on to the next thing. We
started thinking about how a season lasts much longer than a week for us, and
we asked ourselves, How do we continue the conversation with our audience? I
started thinking about the movie 200 Cigarettes—that’s a favorite movie of
mine—and I love that idea of all these different mini stories all converging at
the end.”
A video featuring snaps from the campaign was
released to accompany the announcement. Baauer’s Future and Pusha T-assisted
single “Kung
Fu” serves as the soundtrack to the visual, which can be seen below.
